Dear OpenOffice,
I'm running OpenOffice2.1 (and very appreciative for it), and I
got the notice that 2.2 is available. I go to upgrade it, but then
start encountering things that I don't know what to deal with.
_NOTE_: I'm gonna take some time to give you some good feedback
here, because I'm sure there are LOTS of people who encounter these
same stumbling blocks I am.
I'm a good type to test and give feedback on software, 'cause
I'm diligent and detail-oriented and no dummy, BUT I'm /not/ a
computer guy.
Sure, I was programming Basic as a kid on my Commodore 64, like
lots of kids were, and I've performed Bios upgrades and changed
Registry stuff - but that is because I take a lot of time, focus
and patience to do it - NOT because computers come easy to me. So,
I'm /that/ type of a user.

_BACK TO THE POINT_:
It'd be good if there were some kind of complete upgrade
instructions. For instance:
1.
The link that pops up on my OpenOffice software and tells me an
upgrade is ready sends me to http://update.services.openoffice.org/
ooo/220.html, which mentions 2.2.0 and has a link that sends me to
http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.0/index.html?focus=download,
which then indicates that I'll be actually downloading a full
install version. But this started from an upgrade notice.
Am I understanding this correctly that I'll be downloading a
full install?
If so, do I need to first uninstall v2.1?
OR, is it really just an upgrade and I need to leave v2.1
installed, so the 2.2 upgrade can, well, upgrade?
To upgrade to OpenOffice 2.2 you must download the entire suite. I'm
not sure why but I think it has to do with efficiency - rather than
patching things on like Windows it installs a fresh new entire suite.
2.
Whichever the case, http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.0/index.html?
focus=download gives me the option to include, or not include the
Java JRE w/the download? How do I know if I should include it or
not? Don't I already have Java running on my computer? If I do
include the Java JRE w/the download, do I need to first uninstall
some old Java something or other, before installing the new Java?
Yes I read http://download.openoffice.org/common/java.html, but
I don't know what HSQLDB is, and I don't know if I'll be using any
wizards that rely on Java.
I guess, according to http://download.openoffice.org/common/
java.html, I should just /not/ download Java JRE, and if some
OpenOffice function comes up that needs it, it'll let me know and
direct me to download it.
If you already have JRE on your computer then you can untick the box.
I recommend you install this whether you know if you need it or not
as it is used for many other things as it says on the page you quote
<http://download.openoffice.org/common/java.html>
"We do recommend you however to have a Java Runtime Environment on
your system"
If it is already on your computer it will not install it twice so
you've nothing to lose.
3.
So, I download v2.2, hoping it'll be obvious what to do with it,
but it ain't
The Installation Preparation tells me that the 2.2 installation
files will be unpacked and saved to a folder on my desktop. That
doesn't seem right - UNLESS these unpacked files are something I'll
be deleting after installation (upgrade?) is complete. Is this the
case?
Or will I be moving the unpacked folder elsewhere? If so,
before or after the installation?
Or should I be unpacking them to a different area in the first
place?
How would I know these things? Nothing I see in OpenOffice
FAQs, or elsewhere, indicates the answer, as far as I've seen.
I look at my Program Files folder and see a 255MB OpenOffice2.1
folder there already. Soooo, should I be unpacking to a
OpenOffice2.2 folder in my Program Files folder? Or should I first
uninstall 2.1, delete its folders and then unpack the 2.2 folder
into the Program Files folder?
The installation files are just for that - the installation. After
the installation you may delete the installation files.
Some people have said that one must uninstall 2.1 before installing
2.2 whereas others have reported success with installing one on top
of the other. Personally I un-installed 2.1 before installing 2.2.
4.
I see in the 2.2 Installation Preparation that the Space Required
is 113.1MB, but the 2.2 folder I found is 255MB.
Is that right that the newer version would be smaller than the
older version? OR is it that the 2.2 download is just an upgrade,
therefore smaller size?
The initial download will be smaller than the eventual folder size.
When you run the program it creates templates, user settings and
other files that store things for you so that OpenOffice runs just
the way you want it. Obviously when you download it it doesn't come
with these user-added elements.
5. Last thing I want to do is bloat my computer and cause
conflicts with various versions of an app installed, or with
remnants of partially installed versions here and there, but there
are just so many unexplained variables in doing what I would think
would be a simple upgrade.
Bloatware is something open source software rarely does.
6. I haven't even hit "Unpack" on the 2.2 Installation Preparation
window yet, so who /knows/ what more obstacles I'll encounter or
questions will arise?
CAN YOU HELP?
I'll continue using 2.1 and await your reply before I go on
with this upgrade/install/whatever it is.
I hope I have made some things a little clearer for you. You are
right in that most of these questions have been asked before. I would
also recommend searching the archive of this mailing list for help.

I hope you can get back to me, and appreciate my feedback a
fraction of how much I appreciate your efforts!
