I installed x11 and its update, I downloaded open office 2.2 and
installed. When I click on open office in the applications folder it
starts and you see open office.2.2 org, file, edit on top line and
after 10 15 seconds it quits. 20 imac running 10.4.9 w/ 2g's ram.

Did you follow the installation instructions at
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/
Note that there are different versions of X11 windowing system for
different Mac OS X versions (10.3/Panther and 10.4.x/Tiger, the latter
being yours). The X11 for Tiger has to come from your Mac OS X install
disk(s): it sits in X11User.pkg.
There are also different versions of OpenOffice.org for Intel and PPC
Macs. Did you download the right one?
Besides wrong versions, the problem can also be due to the X11 preferences.
Can you give more info about what X11 tells you (I suppose the small
white window xterm opens before the menu left top turns to OOo). What
says X11 > About X11?
We'll just have to works ourselves thru this... Fortunately a native
version (that can be used directly with Aqua, without X11) is on the
way... probably a stable version will be available this year.
