OpenOffice equivalent of PPT is named Impress.
Your daughter will be able to create presentations just fine with
Impress (just make sure she saves the in PPT format before bringing to
school).
You may or may not encounter some problems when opening .ppt files, but
things will improve with each new released version.
So save money and go for OpenOffice.

Hi there!
I'm a rookie of computer user so thought I would email
you guys before downloading openoffice.
My daughter uses Powerpoint in school, would openoffice
be just as useful as powerpoint. Can she transfer her work
to powerpoint in school so the teacher can read it. Or do I
have to buy the expensive powerpoint for my daughter to be
able to produce her work for school. Hope this makes sense
to you, ha.

Arleen,
to add to your daughter's kudos at school you might like to visit this
page...
http://ooextras.sourceforge.net/downloads/simpress/
A template is the 'background' to the page. One advantage of opensource
is that people produce these things and you can pick them up and use
them for free.
The following concerns your question:
When your daughter opens her new document it will be by using: file...
new...presentation (Open office opens writer first even if you want to
use impress or calc or the database)
To save as a power point use: File....Save as... File name (whatever you
want to call it) ...File type... Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP (.ppt)
I have never had a problem opening a power point in impress nor opening
an impress using power point.
I wish you well... I can never get my son to use anything like open
office... there is too much peer group pressure to all use the same
products, clothes etc.
