Hi Singh

On Linux platform, anyone here have a comparison between Writer and
Textmaker 2006
I wish to know about how well does two way exchange between Word and either of these two products

It sounds like you are editing Word documents with quite complex and unique formatting, so you'll have to download Textmaker and try it for yourself on your own documents.

Here is SoftMaker's statement about Microsoft compatibility, but it sounds like sales talk to me rather than something to rely on:

"When you receive documents from friends or colleagues, you want to edit them with your office suite. Most of the time, these documents are in Microsoft Word (.doc) or Excel (.xls) format. That's why TextMaker and PlanMaker read and write these file formats with highest fidelity. You can even set your default file types in TextMaker and PlanMaker to "Word" and "Excel" and never worry about exchanging documents again!"

You can download a trial demo from SoftMaker's web site, so that you can discover whether the program is suitable without spending any money. There is also a free version of Textmaker for Linux, but it lacks a spell check. The only place I know to get it is the Suse repositories, but after downloading the rpm from there I've successfully installed it on other distros. There seem to be no dependency problems to worry about.

And please let us know how your experiment goes!
