Possibly true, but I am hoping it isn't, because I am at my wits end about
this problem of interconversion. If Microsoft made a version for Linux,
this would not be an issue, but its pointless to expect those thugs to do
that.

An option that may be worth considering is to run Microsoft Office on Linux under Crossover Office, which is a commercial version of Wine. I have heard that it works very well, but haven't tried it myself.

Hopefully, I will get my copy early next week and post my experiences here.

That's the real issue - proprietry formats tend to tie you to one company, while open standards give power to the customer - the power of choice.
