Hello,

I very recently downloaded the open office programs and am learning how to use them.

Which of the available programs from open office would be the equivalent of Microsoft Publisher, as I was previously using this and wish to use a similar format in the future.

There is no equivalent program to Publisher, at least not in the way that Writer is analogous to Word, and Calc is analogous to Excel. Nothing will open a Publisher file except for Publisher. So there is no compatibility between Publisher and any of the OpenOffice programs, like there is between Writer and Word for example.

Depending on what you need to do, Writer can to a credible job of some page layout functions. I'm editor of a newsletter, which I use Writer for, and it works fairly well. I've heard that Draw can also be used to do some functions that Publisher can do, but I don't have any experience doing so.

I previously used Excel and wonder at this time why the "SUM" function does not work in open office.

The SUM button (upper case Greek sigma) does work. What you need to do is to click in the cell where you want the formula to appear. Let's say you want to sum the numbers in the range A1:A10, and you want the sum to be displayed in A12. Click in A12, and click the SUM button. Calc will attempt to guess the range that you want to sum. In the above example, it will guess correctly. If it has guessed correctly, then press Enter. If it doesn't guess correctly, then simply (after you click the SUM button) highlight the range that you want to sum, and press enter.

No doubt I am doing something incorrect. Can you please direct me in these matters.

Thank-you kindly
