There have been several blog entries in GullFOSS (see second link above) about the ongoing filter work in Writer, Calc and Impress. You should see it that way: providing ODF filters for MSOffice was comparably easy as we could reuse the existing code of the WorxelPoint filters in OOo for that. In fact it didn't cost us a lot of extra development work. But writing new filters for the O"O"XML format is much more work to do. The specification is huge and it takes a lot of time to implement all the bells and whistles that have been stuffed into it. If people say that it is hard to implement this format and impossible to implement it completely they do not exaggerate. We hope to have filters with a good quality in the OOo 3.0 release (Beta in spring next year).
