What must also be remembered is that unless you encode your message, your email is transmitted as plain text and the vast majority of email users don't encode. This makes it fairly easy for sniffers to intercept mail and scan for private information. In most cases where the mail is person to person this is not a real problem but a high volume list like Open Office would be a natural target for the sniffers.
