That happened to me once
I checked the options for substituting OpenOffice.org for the
3 MS Office file formats.
Just uninstall the OpenOffice.org and restart the computer
double-click the DOC file to make sure it works with Word again
Then - reinstall OpenOffice.org without clicking on the options
to allow automatic opening of the MS documents.
I use OpenOffice.org 2.2.x as my default package, BUT
I also have MS Office 2003 installed for the 5% of the
files that do not work well with Writer, Calc, etc.

All my WORD documents now have the Open Office icon, and I can't open
them in WORD.
I need to change them back to WORD and I don't know what to do.
