Hello Ann

OpenOffice.org can read and edit Word files and save them as *.doc
files that can be read by MS Word. Contrary to what Marian says,
formatting will not be lost if you switch a file from OOo to Word and
back (only in complex cases will there be differences)

When your student saves her work, she has to choose File > Save As. In
the dialog box that appears, she has to choose Microsoft Word 98 /
2000 / XP in the File Type droplist, see that the Automatic File Name
Extension is checked, give the file a name and hit the save button.

OpenOffice.org is free do download and use on as many locations as you
like (http://download.openoffice.org). You can install it on your
school's computers and have the students use it at home.

Good luck!
