Do other applications have similar problems?  How is your computer
running in general?  There are many issues that can cause such problems
in Windows.  Have you tried reinstalling OpenOffice?  One thing you can
try, as an experiment, is to download the USB drive version of
OpenOffice from portableapps.com and see if it runs correctly (it's also
handy should you want to run OpenOffice on a computer that doesn't have
it installed).  As this version is completely independent of what's on
your computer, it will indicate where the problem may lie.  Also, having
a mix of Word and OpenOffice files is not the cause of the problem.
