I have used OO for a couple years- never a problem. I recently installed

I finally tried to un-install it or repair the installation, but it said I
didn't have the 'msi' file.
I tried downloading and reinstalling on top of the old, again, no luck. I
tried rebooting, reinstalling, un-installing etc. (and searching for the
pesky missing file) all, fruitless.
I am at the point of just deleting all my OO directories, at least the
2.3one, and trying that, but I didn't want to leave a mess.
I'm on WinXPhome ed. with all updates. On a fairly new Sony laptop.
Thanks for your help!

First try this to clean up the "msi" problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 You should now be able cleanly to
(un)install OpenOffice. If you do a clean install, then the registration
problem should go away.
Next, if this hasn't cured the registration problem, search for a file
named "setup.xcu". There should be two. The one you want will probably
be in
C:\Documents and Settings\<userName>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\registry\data\org\openoffice where "<userName>"
is the user name you were logged in as when you installed OpenOffice.
Having found this file, quit all OpenOffice programs **including** the
Quickstarter and then rename the file so it has a different extension
(change the ".xcu" to something else). To quit the Quickstarter (if it's
running) right click on its icon (grey/blue with two flying birds) in
the System Tray and choose Exit. Having renamed the file, start
OpenOffice. You will be asked to register one more time. Either register
or just say "already registered".
All should now be sweetness and light. If not, come back here with
details of exactly what you did and exactly what happened, especially
including the text of any error messages.
