On a Windows system, if you do not have Microsoft Office installed (or at
least Word) then Microsoft's mail program is not able to check spelling.
This is yet another example of Microsoft's "lock in" policy.

However, there are separate spell checkers available for, for example,
Outlook Express. I use ABCSpell from Isota which is not freeware. There are
freeware programs available though; Google is your friend.

Alternatively, and I think better, switch to a freeware mail program like
Thunderbird from Mozilla, the same people who gave us Firefox. That has its
own spell checker and can use the same dictionary as OpenOffice.
