This is consistent with Microsoft Word, but it doesn't seem right there,
either.

I am afraid there is not much to do about it. Although it may be possible to remove the extra paragraph outside the table, that would probably create problems for many users who alternate between tables and text. I agree that it is annoying though.

If I need a table to completely fill the page, I find the work-around for the blank second page problem is to make the font as small as possible in the paragraph following the table and to ensure that there is no defined space before or after the paragraph. A 4 point font set as sub, or superscript has done the trick for me on numerous occasions, both with M$ Word and OOo.

A trivial adjustment to the bottom margin of the page may also be helpful, bearing in mind that the margin is irrelevant when there is nothing to follow the table on the page in question. I've often set it to zero and ignored the inevitable warnings.;-)

2. I changed all of column 1 to font Arial size 12. Then I used the paintbrush to modify the first word in each phrase filling column 1 so that it would be changed to Arial size 10. You know what happened? The remaining words in the phrase got changed to Times Roman all by themselves.

I haven't analysed your precise problem scenario, but you will probably find that the problem "goes away" if you use the Styles and Formatting facilities, rather than manual formatting. If you either modify, or create paragraph styles to reflect your requirements in your tables all should be well.
