First, there is no need to purchase any OpenOffice download.  OpenOffice is
Free Software and you can download the latest version here:

http://www.openoffice.org

The latest version is 2.3.  It is absolutely free of charge and everyone is
welcome to download and use it.  Nobody will ever send you a bill, there is no
catch.

Second, Microsoft Office can't read the default format that OpenOffice saves
documents and presentations in.  This is a shortcoming in Microsoft Office, not
in OpenOffice.  OpenOffice uses an international standard for saving documents.

You can tell OpenOffice to save your documents in a format that Microsoft
Office can read by selecting "Save As" instead of "Save" and then pick the
Microsoft format off of the list  of available formats that shows up.
