1) You didn't have to purchase OpenOffice.  It's a free download from www.openofffice.org.
2)  You're probably saving your files in the default ISO standard OpenDocument formats, which Microsoft refuses to support.  This means you'll have to save or send your files in Microsoft Office or PDF format.  Also, when you save your files, you may want to enable automatic filename extensions.
