I agree that they are not necessary as setting in Tools > Options but I
too think, that they are useful in the toolbar.

I see from the issue referenced in the spec that this change is already
completed and integrated.

I do hope this is an oversight, and not official policy that changes
like this should happen with virtually no input from the people that use
the software, and that the public announcement happens after the work is
finished.
While this change certainly reduces complexity, it seems like a step
backward in usability because we have given up features to buy reduced
complexity.
