I clean forgot the other reason I did things this way.

One format I need is a fanfold booklet - 6 pages, 3 per landscape a4 
side. Currently done as a simple 3-column layout.

But you can't do page numbering or footnotes/headers this way. So I was 
also looking for a more flexible approach to layout.
