It sounds as if you are trying to save files received from your clients that you've modified, but were initially "read only." Have you tried saving the file with a new name, as well as an extension appropriate for your client? I work with client's files daily. If they're sent to me as "read only," then I simply add an underscore along with my initials to the original filename, thereby identifying the file as a file that I have modified. An example is a file received from a client named "AdvertisingList.doc." After my edits are complete, I save the file as "AdvertisingList_slp.doc." If there are several edits to the file over several hours or days, then I append another underscore along with a numeral, such as "AdvertisingList_slp_3.doc." As a newly saved file, you should have no difficulty saving it in any format you choose.
If my assumptions are incorrect, please clarify your situation. When you installed OpenOffice, you were given the option of making it the default application for Microsoft Office files. It is easy to change this back, by resetting the file associations (as described below). Beyond that, however, the installation should have had absolutely no effect on Microsoft Office or files. Are you saying you can't save in Microsoft formats? How are you saving them. You have to select the appropriate file type when saving. By default, OpenOffice saves in the ISO standard ODF file formats, which Microsoft refuses to support. When you use "Save as", you have to select the desired file type from the drop down list. Simply changing the extension will not work. Also, enable automatic file type extension. If you have further problems, please ask here again. Changing file associations Right click on file icon Select Open With > Choose Program... Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
