OpenOffice can save documents in Microsoft Office format, but you have
to use Save as and then chose the appropriate file type, from the drop
down list.  Simply changing the file extension from .ODT to .DOC will
not work.  Also make sure automatic file extension is selected.  If you
work only with Microsoft Office files, it is possible to make those
formats the default for saving.

BTW, the latest version of OpenOffice is 2.3.1
