Hi Mike,
My printer ( HP Deskjet 692 C ),actually shows an instruction right
on the
tray that pictures the envelope with it's flap side up with the flap
to the
right. There's even an arrow showing how to insert it. It has worked for
years with Microsoft's WORD program.
Why is this so hard? When one clicks on Insert>Envelope a dialogue box
appears: one of the tabs - the right-most one - offers a choice of
orientation that covers all possibilities and then also offers various
options to fine-tune the envelope position. This beyond argument
covers the HP 600 series (and the 900 series I am still using on
occasion).
"Help" - at least in OOo V2.3.1 - is also what it says on the tin -
helpful!

One caveat - Sometimes the orientation must be lied about. I use an HP
1100 LaserJet, and even though I physically insert the envelope in the
middle of the printer, I must choose the right-hand insert icon to get
it to print the envelope correctly.
Go figure.
