Hello Larry - thanks for your tip.

I've just tried it and despite pointing all MS office docs to be opened by OO I
only see a blank OO word processor page (Writer) when I try to open .doc
documents and even when I try to open .xls files OO always opens a blank Writer
page while it should open the Spreadsheet application and the xls file
inside....

I am getting lost - thought it would be easier to use OO in Mac OS environment:(

Many thanks in advance for any ideas how to fix this.

I think the problem is that the MS Office documents aren't set to be
opened with OO.o. Try this

Go to one of your MS docs in finder. Right click (or ctrl/click) on it.
Click 'Get Info'
Towards the bottom of the information box that opens is "Open with:"
Set OpenOffice.org in that setting, then click on 'Change all'. You will
need to do this with every MS Office file type.
