Can you open the files directly from OpenOffice ?

opened by OO I only see a blank OO word processor page (Writer) when
I try to open .doc documents and even when I try to open .xls files
OO always opens a blank Writer page while it should open the
Spreadsheet application and the xls file inside....
I am getting lost - thought it would be easier to use OO in Mac OS
