Fyi:

When I save a .doc file on desktop and try to open it - it opens up just a 
blank Writer page

However:

When I launch  the Writer manually first and then go through the  "Open" icon 
and point to the same .doc file on the desktop the requested document loads up 
inside the Writer without any problems...
The same applies for .xls files
