1) You didn't have to pay for OpenOffice. It's a free download from www.openoffice.org. 2) OpenOffice includes Writer, not Word. Word is part of Microsoft Office. 3) I haven't used Vista, but in XP there should be an OpenOffice folder & icons in the Start menu. 4) Assuming you have Writer in front of you and not Word, you can open any type of document from the File drop down menu.
