OpenOffice can read & write Microsoft Office files, except those in the
new format (.DOCX etc.) as created by Office 2007.  When you submit a
document, you'll have to use Save as, to select an appropriate file type
(Word, Excel etc.) from the drop down list.

While you can uninstall OpenOffice, there's no reason why you can't have
more than one office suite on the same computer, as I do at work.
