It is possible to install only part of the suite, by selecting custom install, though doing so is not recommended and won't save much space. Unlike Microsoft Office, OpenOffice is a fully integrated package, which means much of the code is shared between the various components. By installing only part of the suite, you only avoid installing a small amount of code and you may lose some functionality.
