OK - I think my problem is now solved.  I re-installed for a third time and
got OpenOffice2.3 - 304 MB in Program Files - found swriter.exe tucked away
in the program folder, made a shortcut for the desktop, and this opens the
word processor and a registration dialogue.  Still not listed in the Start
menu, but a Qickstarter icon has now appeared.  What an obscure way to have
to get into a new piece of software for the first time, if I may say so: I
hope the prog itself works better than this installation routine!
