What you're referring to, is the replacement of 1/4 or 1/2 with smaller substitutes, which does not happen with 1/3 etc. You can turn this off for 1/4 and 1/2 by clicking on Tools > AutoCorrect and selecting the Options tab. You'll see a line that says "Replace 1/2... with 1/2" that has two checks beside it. Click on those checks to remove them and the substitution will not occur for 1/4 and 1/2.
