Whenever I launch Open Office, it goes thru an install / unpack routine.
Is this normal - or is there a setting that needs to be made to provide
a more autonomous startup of Open Office?

Have you looked in the >Start >My Programs for a folder of
OpenOffice.org and in there should be all the icons to run the various
parts of OpenOffice. all that is on the desktop is the install.
