Does it happen for all users? If not, you might try moving your config 
area (~/.openoffice  ?????) to one side and trying again. Otherwise 
(and I'm no expert!!) I think I'd try complete removal and 
reinstallation. Probably quicker than trying to find what went wrong 
and then fixing it.
