By default OOo (OpenOffice.org) saves files in the international
standard OpenDocument (ODF, ISO/IEC 26300) format [1], which Microsoft
refuses to directly support.

The solution is to use the "File -> Save As..." menu option and select
"Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP (.ppt)" from the "Save as type"
drop-down list, ensuring that the "Automatic file name extension" option
is ticked/checked.
