I have Visio (old Tech 5.0a version before they were bought by MS) and
Dia (linux - http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/). I find myself using
Dia quite often now and seldom bring up Visio in Wine (linux).
Furthermore, there is a very large selection of shapes & tools for Dia
that are not available for my old version of Visio. In addition, if I do
something thing in Dia, I can export it to OOo & OOo to Dia.

That said, you can do some pretty sophisticated things with Draw; for
the OP - here is a link to some basic shapes/templates from Mark Lautman
to try:

For a coolness test, just take one of the layered shapes and turn on 3D :-)
