I had done precisely that, but since the resulting paragraph formats were not identical, I created two paragraph styles, one for the left and one for the right. I now see that I can use the Heading style for both and customize left and right heading variants as you've described. Definitely simpler. Thank you for the suggestion.
Is there some way to visually see that a particular paragraph has overridden one or more parts of the style it uses (e.g., the margins for the headers)? In FrameMaker, an asterisk appears next to the name of the style when the cursor is in a paragraph that has overridden its style in some way. Does Writer have something similar?
