Sorry to re-quibble, but that was the launch date of the first IBM PC. There
were desktop PCs around before that (PC = personal computer), and in fact
the IBM PC was a step backward in the desktop PC market (having to chose
from two colour palettes for you graphics came as quite a shock after having
the freedom to chose what colours you wanted, for example).

I was using a DEC Professional well before the IBM PC came along - a lovely 
machine compared to the IBM. Sadly, IBM, with its large and established
sales force, had the muscle to force its inferior machines into businesses.

I'm not sure that desktop PC's went back as far as 1978, thoguh.
