No, you are not alone and it is not a Ubuntu thing, but it may be a deb thing.
I have it in Debian Etch, running 2.0.4 (Also under Tools.)

Not just a deb thing either. Non distro RPM based 2.3.1 has it as well.
Haven't found a file type that it can deal with yet.
