 Or mam I totally alone in the world having a [Tools -> Media Player] option
 in my OpenOffice.org suite?

 I am running OpenOffice.org 2.3.0, the most recent Ubuntu version and my OS
 is Ubuntu 7.10. Is this maybe just an Ubuntu specific thing?

Hi,
you are no alone in the world, there is a mediaplayer in my OpenOffice
Writer as well Tools->Mediaplayer. But maybe that is only under
Ubuntu.

Nope - OOo2.3.1/XP has media player, right under gallery on the tools menu in writer; also appears in calc and impress.

Opens up a horridly wide subwindow with a large '?' in the middle, and a few buttons and bows.....

OK, let's clear this mess up.

From the Help in OpenOffice:
=========== begin quote =====
Media Player
Opens the Media Player window where you can preview movie and sound files as well as insert these files into the current document.
To access this command...
Choose Tools - Media Player

The Media Player supports many different media formats. You can also insert media files from the Media Player into your document.

On Windows systems, the Media Player uses DirectShow, which should be installed on your system by default.
=========== end quote ======

DirectShow is an API (Application Programming Interface; Johnny Rosenberg, that's another way in this context of saying Framework - skelet eller struktur in Danish, don't know the Swedish) which allows programmers to write software with predefined interfaces and using pre-written modules that perform various pre-defined functions.

From the Microsoft web site:
===== begin quote ====
DirectShow

The Microsoft® DirectShow® application programming interface (API) is a media-streaming architecture for the Microsoft Windows® platform. Using DirectShow, your applications can perform high-quality video and audio playback or capture.

The DirectShow headers, libraries, SDK tools, and samples are available in the Windows SDK.

* Note Previous versions of the DirectShow SDK shipped as part of the DirectX SDK. The last version of the DirectX SDK that included DirectShow was "DirectX 9.0 SDK Update - (February 2005) Extras." The DirectShow SDK was moved to the Windows SDK starting with the Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 SP1 Platform SDK. To get the latest DirectShow SDK, download the latest version of the Windows SDK.

On Win XP, OpenOffice's "media player" button can play .avi and .wav files. Click the little folder icon bottom left and browse to a file. Double click that file and, if it's in an appropriate format, OpenOffice will play it. I don't know what "appropriate format" is on Windows other than .avi and .wav are on the list. I've also discovered that .mov (QuickTime) is *not* on the list. I have no idea what types of media OpenOffice can play on other OS's. I *assume* that the same "media player" is invoked when you insert sound into an Impress presentation but that's really a guess.
