Since you describe yourself as a newby, i completely understand why you'd rather not mess with X11 right now. However, i would also suggest that a newby would be better off not using a test version of our software. Does your brother-in-law also use Mac? If so, he might walk you through installing and using X11. Otherwise i'd recommend you try another project http://www.neooffice.org/ .
