Small, polite request to you, James, and others; *please* don't respond
to posters requests for help, particularly unsubscribe posters, with
disparaging and sophomoric remarks about the software the poster is
using and/or asking about - in this case Microsoft. Doing so only
demeans OOo and the purpose of this list.
If you want to use silly names for MS in a discussion thread where all
seem to be on the same page/rant about Microsoft products, then by all
means do so. However, keep in mind that this most likely was the first
post by this person seeking advise ("I am a new user running OpenOffice
2.3. in a Windows XP environment"), and to have a response back such as
yours most likely not be taken well by the recipient.
Keep in mind that OOo is a multi-OS suite with considerable work done
daily to keep it in tune with Microsoft's OS(s). There are literally
thousands of OOo users (including many regulars on this list) that use
Microsoft's OS and other products[1].
In many cases, Microsoft's Office products perform significantly better
than OOo (fill-in forms which are used by millions of government &
public service workers are a good example). OOo are working hard to fill
the gap, but it doesn't mean that OOo can do so, nor should do so, for
every user and/or software package.
Therefore I believe that it is far better to respond politely and
correctly to the poster with: 1) a possible & factual solution to the
question asked, and 2) add constructive suggestions for an alternate
solution if warranted.
You may like FireFox - I don't, and probably never will, but I support
it; I have used Netscape since day one and exclusively use SeaMonkey on
*all* my, and my customer machines. I do use FF, and Thunderbird, and
Claws, and Evolution, etc., etc., but mostly for testing with the few
exceptions of Evolution used for regular accounts. So would that justify
me making fun of those that use "FunnyFox" and "Turdbird" because they
aren't using an inclusive browser/mail/newsreader like SeaMonkey, or
using Outlook (which is/was an outstanding program last I used it)?
Point being is that you've/we no idea regarding why the poster is using
the software they use, nor do we need to be software bigots if the
poster is using software xyz. The purpose of the list is to provide
assistance to *all* posters with regards to OOo, whether they use Linux,
Solaris, BSD, MAC, or any other platform that OOo may run on.
I'll get off my soapbox and now boot from my Linux drive to my Windows
drive to fetch all of the security updates that Microsoft probably has
waiting for me since my last boot. In the meantime perhaps someone on
the list with IE experience can figure out a reasonable response to the
original posters request...
