OpenOffice doesn't currently support that format. You'll have to arrange to have those files saved in an older Word format. Another option is to use the free Microsoft Word Viewer and Compatibility Pack to open those files, so you can cut & paste into OpenOffice. Installing the Word Viewer will make it the default application for Word docments, so you'll have to reset the file associations back to OpenOffice.

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
