I can insert any special character in OOo on my Linux computer by doing
Ctrl-Shift+u, then typing the hex code and then the spacebar. But when
I try it in OOo 2.3 on Windows XP at the university computer lab, I get
strange results. That is, according to the XP Help file I'm supposed to
be able to enter any character in any Windows app by holding down Alt,
then typing the code with the numlock key on. The Help file doesn't say
hex or decimal, nor does it say whether it requires leading zeroes, but
I tried all the possibilities and I do not get the correct character.
Oddly, I do get *a* character, just not the *right* character. And yes,
I tried all kinds of different characters, and yes the characters are
in the font. For example, if I type code 251 or 0251 (hex), or 593 or
0593 (decimal), I get a check mark. It's supposed to be a script a in
the Unicode IPA extensions section.
I also tried the MS Word method - type the hex code, then Alt-x. But
that doesn't do anything at all.
Looking at the Help file for OOo on the XP machine it just references
Insert . Special Character. It does not say anything about inserting
with the code. Surely this can be done, right?
John,
Same problem here on WinXP Pro, OOo v2.4 I have always used the ALT key
and the three digit (decimal) number.
I'm getting the old box-line drawing characters that I haven't seen
since the DOS days. No matter what font or encoding I select, it's the
same old characters.
