I also tried the MS Word method - type the hex code, then Alt-x. But
that doesn't do anything at all.
Looking at the Help file for OOo on the XP machine it just references
Insert . Special Character. It does not say anything about inserting
with the code. Surely this can be done, right?

Same problem here on WinXP Pro, OOo v2.4 I have always used the ALT key
and the three digit (decimal) number.
I'm getting the old box-line drawing characters that I haven't seen
since the DOS days. No matter what font or encoding I select, it's the
same old characters.
Thanks for the quick reply. At least I know I'm not going crazy.
So the next question is, who should we blame? Did MS change the code
for XP so that OOo wouldn't work? Or is it our fault? And has a bug
report been filed?
Just to add to the mystery, My XP Pro with a newly download of 2.4.0
with 2.3.1 totally uninstalled (followed by deleting the folders in
program files, followed by an install of 2.4.0 ) does give me the check
mark using Alt and 251 on the number pad. The Calc cell was set to
Arial and font size 16.
