Thanks for the quick reply. At least I know I'm not going crazy.
So the next question is, who should we blame? Did MS change the code
for XP so that OOo wouldn't work? Or is it our fault? And has a bug
report been filed
John,
Well, maybe you aren't going crazy but I think I just might be. After
I wrote you I discovered that if I use ALT + 3 digit (hex) code, I get
the old dos character set symbols. However, if I use ALT + 4 digit
(hex) code (0+whatever), I get the correct characters.
Back in January Jim Allan told us about a "Quick Unicode Input" utility
at http://www.cardbox.com/quick.htm which I installed and found to work
very well on my Win XP Pro box. I still have it installed but now it
doesn't seem to work at all in OOo. As far as I know the only thing
that's changed is the version of OOo I'm using (2.2 then, 2.4 now). Any
ideas anyone? Is Jim Allan listening?
The utility works in Thunderbird but *only* if I enter the decimal value
for the character. For example a "not equals sign" "?" is Unicode hex
2260 but I have to enter Alt 8800 where 8800 is the decimal equivalent.
Also the numbers *must* be entered from the numeric keypad. The same is
true fro Windows's Wordpad program even though the book says I should be
able to enter Alt 2260.
There's an old bug in OOo which might be relevant:

This is still not fixed on OOo 2.3.1 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP, using a
variety of computers (mine and at university computer labs). The problem does
not exist on Linux, where Ctrl-Shift+u and hex works properly.
