I have just upgraded with OO 2.4 and now find that the extension of my text files have changed from Microsoft word 97/2000/XP to Type: DOC and consequently I can only open them by right clicking them and using the "open with" from the menu and selecting "swriter"

Those files that were saved as ODF Text Document (.odt) are OK but they are less that 5% of my total files.

Converting them one at a time is a pain. Also my e-amailing partners cannot open then either which is a bigger pain. So where do I go from here ?

I don't think you mean "text files" which have a ".txt" extension and which wouldn't cause anyone problems with e-mail. I think you mean "MS Office documents" with a ".doc" extension. Right click on the name of one of the files and choose Properties. Near the top it says "Open with" followed by the name of a program and a button labelled "Change". Click this button and browse to the program you want (I'm not sure from your wording whether you want to have them open with MS Word or with OOo Writer). Make sure the "Always use ..." box is ticked (checked) before clicking OK. You have just changed the "File Association" (Windows jargon) so that text files are now associated with the program you just chose.

When you installed OpenOffice 2.4 you will have been asked whether it should set itself as the program associated to .doc (Word), .xls (Excel) and/or .ppt (PowerPoint) files. You must have inadvertently answered the wrong way to what you wanted.
