I assume you're running Windows.

When you install OpenOffice, you're given the option of making it the default application for Microsoft Office documents. You can easily change the settings later, by resetting the file associations. Follow the directions below and you'll only have to do it that one time.

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
