  It doesn't include other software, it includes the appropriate
  filters for the various file formats. So, for example, you could
  chose Word format and OpenOffice will save in that format. You
  appear to be confusing file format with the application.
  OpenOffice, like many other word processors can save in Word
  format. It also saves, by default in the ISO standard ODF formats.
  It's simply a choice of what format you wish to use. Over the
  years, the various word processors have had their own proprietary
  formats. In many cases, competitive products would try to support
  the main ones. Now, there is the ISO standard Open Document
  Format, which is available to all and many applications support it.
  Microsoft, however refuses to support it, primarily because
  they're trying to use format "lock in" to force people to buy their
  products.
