Hi Linda,

If you are your own publisher you can use OpenOffice.org to write your books from A to Z. If you submit your books to a printer, you can export them as .pdf-files.

OpenOffice.org allows you to create a master document and have all the chapters in separate files, still allowing you to use the same style throughout the entire work.

OOo has the possibility to record changes. So you can pass your chapters to proofreaders and see what they changed to your work. At that point you can decide to accept or reject their proposed changes.

There is also spell checking available and grammar checking is just around the corner.

On top of all that OOo is rock solid and it works on several platforms among which Linux (rock solid operating system which is virtually immune to viruses and spyware), Windows and MAC OS.

If you work with a publisher and this publisher forces you to use Microsoft's formats, you can still create/edit your documents with OOo, but then you use Save As to export them as .doc 97/2000/XP.

I hope this helps,

Jo

A big plus is that when using OOo, you don't force your proofreaders to purchase an overpriced office suite (or to break the law if they would install an illegal version)
