1. Right-click on the footnote reference (in the main text) and
     select Footnote...
  2. Select the Character option button
  3. Type x
  4. Click OK.

(hope that works for you)

I can't find a way to change the symbol associated with a footnote. For example, suppose I've decided that footnotes 1 and 2 should be come footnotes x and y. How can I change the symbols for the footnotes?

As a workaround, I can insert new footnotes, copy/paste the footnote text from the old to new footnotes, then delete the old footnotes, but that's rather roundabout. Is there a more direct way?

Thanks,

Scott
