I can't find a way to change the symbol associated with a footnote. For example, suppose I've decided that footnotes 1 and 2 should be come footnotes x and y. How can I change the symbols for the footnotes?

As a workaround, I can insert new footnotes, copy/paste the footnote text from the old to new footnotes, then delete the old footnotes, but that's rather roundabout. Is there a more direct way?

Yes:

o Position the cursor immediately before the first footnote reference.
o Go to Edit | Footnote... (or right-click | Footnote...).
o Type the required character in the box (or use the "..." button to search for it). The radio button will change from Automatic to Character automatically. o Use the right-arrow button at the bottom right of the panel to advance to the next footnote reference.
o Repeat as necessary and press OK when complete.

I trust this helps.
