I am running a 64-bit gentoo, but doing an emerge -s java I see:

 app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-java

This gives the 32-bit library

There is also dev-java/java-config   and

dev-java/sun-jdk

which I think are compiled as 64-bit

My understanding is that most browsers are using javascript which is not the same as java the language used by OOo. Java is not essential to run OOo, but it is necessary for the wizards and the database I understand.
